FINISHES
Any of the myriad finishing processes outlined here can be applied to any of your projects– cabinetry, furniture, or millwork. That’s where Justin’s expertise comes in. With his years of experience and creative vision, he will work with you to design a finish that will make your project a work of art. There are no limits to the results we can achieve with imagination and skill.
Complete Refinish
A process that usually starts with any necessary structural repairs or veneer repair. The old finish is removed and the wood is then sanded. Depending on the desired look there can be as few as 4 or five steps or as detailed as 14 or 15 steps to complete the project. Click here for a example of a refinishing step process.
Painting
This is a painted finish like you have never seen before. For many people the painted finish is still very desirable, find any color sample that you desire form any home center or paint manufacture and I can duplicate that color with a paint that is compatible with my finishing products. This not only gives you durability and moisture protection in high traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms but also gives depth, durability and strength to the finish.
Distressed Finish
Distressed finishes are very popular right now and there are great benefits to choosing this finish. Not only do they have a nice rich look to them but because of the distressing, the wear over many years is virtually undetectable. The process is usually best started by removal of the old finish but if the finish is still intact to hold adhesion of the new finish the first step can be skipped. All distressing is done by hand and can be done to the desired effect of the customer. Click here for an example of a distressed process.
Clean & Coat
Refresh your old finish- What I call a “clean and coat” others might call this process “refurbishing”. If the previous finish is still intact you may be able to get away with a thorough cleaning, light sanding and new top coat. This process is ideal if you are happy with the color but want a refreshed look. Repairs and touch up along with color shading can be done with this process to create a less expensive alternative to complete refinishing.
“With my experience in the furniture repair business I have seen a lot of changes in construction and finish quality mostly as the result of outsourcing to minimize cost for the manufacturers. The end result is that you are not getting what you pay for. What you think is solid wood could actually be pressed paper with a photo of wood grain on top. I have even seen plastic resins used to replicate solid wood chair legs.
I take pride in my work not only looking beautiful but also being durable. In my repair and touch up experience, a good quality finish will not only last many times longer but will be able to be easily repaired. My finishes look just as good from 10 inches away as they do from 10 feet.”
As you have browsed through this site you have seen many examples of Justin’s work. These same finishes can be applied to any wood surface. Think about any one of the finishes applied to all the cabinetry and casework of an entire kitchen, and imagine how greatly that could transform the appearance and ambience of the home.
Upon meeting with Justin you will discuss what direction or ideas you have for your project. Even if you have a picture from a magazine of something you really like Justin will explain to you what steps need to be involved to achieve that finish. Real wood color samples can be made to show you exactly what your new finish will look like. These color samples will follow the exact same finishing steps as required for your project. More than one can be made with similar colors or tones to give you even more variety to choose from.
All colors and stains are custom made, and by using a calibrated and recorded measuring system your color can be exactly matched on another project at a future date.
THE TOP NOTCH DIFFERENCE
At Top Notch, we use time-tested techniques, hand-finishing each piece with care. We bring Old World craftsmanship and pride to our work, and are only satisfied when our customer is. These days standard cabinet grade finishes are done in a 4-5 step process– one dent and you see bare wood. By contrast, the Top Notch Finishing process takes a minimum of 7 steps, resulting in a fine furniture finish.
